In my 20 years of being a musician, I have served under several ministries and churches as Minister of Music or musician.  I have directed many choirs and conducted several workshops.  I have learned that the key to a great music ministry is understanding the true meaning of Praise & Worship and knowing that the choir should just be an extension of the spirit-filled atmosphere that should already exist. It's not as much about the song you sing, but the spirit in which the song is sang(assuming we are talking about true Gospel).  I believe whether a Hymn or a "Contempory" song, they should be delivered with passion and the spirit of Christ!
